Jerked Around by the Magic Circle viewing
Just read the entire article and make a simple look upon the connection between Magic Circle and Homo Ludens.
We are discussing the border between the world a game involved us in and the real world we are in, and the meaning generated from a game and the relationshio between real life, that is what called a “magic circle” if I didn’t go wrong about the oppinion the author is saying.
The debate is around whether a magic circle exists, and the author was once doubted about the concept he involved some others in for a research purpose.
The world a game created, and the very basic world we are in is seperated, this point determines that a magic circle exists and binds. The author made reference to the article Homo Ludens a lot to make this piece of sense, as Homo Ludens refered a lot in its first section about how to define a game and its world.
It is really hard to understand what a magic circle jerk is and I really hope what did I read out of this topic is right. The conflictions between the author and the critics in this article is a bunch of people insists to make the YES OR NO question about magic circle a closed one, no matter who insists magic circle does exist or doesn’t, one shouldn’t put a closed theory to it and should see what purpose and feild they are in instead.
It is really a hard article and to the inspiration I gained, the magic circle goes beyond real world with the meaning punping out of it, is a thing we should look at with our designer’s eyes. A meaning that a game generated is not born there by default. It is the work and thinking we single designer contains. Also we should keep a open eye when design, as we do not wanna close the magic circle and become a “magic circle jerk”.
